I was raised near Buffalo, New York, within a close-knit family of six including my parents and three sisters. As a family we actively attended Knox United Presbyterian Church. My early spiritual formation was shaped within the church.
Following my studies at Gordon College, Wenham, MA, I progressed to Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, South Hamilton, MA, earning a Master of Divinity in 1983. During my last year of seminary, I served as Youth Director at the First Baptist Church of Abington, MA. After graduating, the Abington church called me as an associate Minister of Christian Education After responding to a new call, on May 1, 1987, I started as pastor at First Baptist Church, Hingham, MA.
At an early age, I had an abiding sense of God’s call to pastoral ministry. Moving through various stages of education and experience, my calling to pastoral ministry has been sustained, as I strive to be faithful to that calling. A centering focus in ministry has been on nurturing relationships – with God, my family, and my church family. My concentration in ministry is on preaching, teaching, small group ministry, and pastoral care.
The ministry of our church took a positive shift in 2018, when Pastor Geoff and I became co-pastors. God has blessed our shared ministry unifying different voices and talents.
My wife Deborah and I have two wonderful daughters, Kendra and Andria, along with our family expanding into the next generation with two granddaughters Alice and Lulu. During my personal time, I especially enjoy walking, limited yard work, playing golf, and kayaking. With gratitude and praise, I celebrate abundant blessings in my life.
I was born in St. Louis, Missouri where my father was the first African American journalist to write for the St Louis Post-Dispatch. He eventually became an American diplomat for the US State Department which provided our family the wonderful opportunity to live in Berlin for five years and Monrovia, Liberia for two years.
From an early age, I had a passion for music with a primary focus on the piano and composing music. That passion has led to the wonderful opportunity to perform for audiences across North America (Washington DC, San Francisco, New York, Toronto, and Puebla, Mexico), and Europe (London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome). I am also a strong believer in utilizing music to glorify God. I received my undergraduate degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, a Master’s in Music from the University of Massachusetts (Lowell), a Master’s of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School, and a Doctorate in Ministry from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 2009.
The playing, singing, composing and teaching of music in both public venues and within church communities dominated my early career experiences. In recent years, I was the Minister of Music for the Southern Baptist Church in Boston from 2004 to 2006. I was the Minister of Music and an Associate Minister with the Tremont Temple Baptist Church in Boston from 2006-2016. In 2016, I joined the First Baptist Church of Hingham as Minister of Music. In 2018, in partnership with the Pastor Gary Ludwig, I became co-pastor. God has blessed our shared ministry unifying different voices and talents.
My wife Irene and I have been blessed with 6 wonderful children and 7 beautiful grandchildren.
